What Do Organizers Do?

Professional Organizing

What is it and how can you benefit from it?

As the owner of Sappari Solutions, I have been in this business for over 10 years. As our business has grown, it has been so rewarding to see first hand how organizing services can free people from clutter and truly help them overcome the obstacles they are facing.  It amazes me to see the diversity of the people we have the pleasure to call clients.  We have moms (& dads) with kids who need a helping hand to organize their chaotic lives and schedules.  We have retired singles, and couples who are overwhelmed by paperwork, technology and all of the things they have accumulated over the years.  We have people who love to be organized but just don’t know where to start.  We have people who hate to organize and would rather someone else do it.  We have clients who have had a traumatic event in their lives and just need support to get back on their feet again.  No matter what the situation, getting help and non-judgmental support may be just what you need to overcome the hurdles you face.

Recently, I read an articleWhat Professional Organizers Really Do and How They Can Help You by Alan Henry.  It was an excellent article and it got me thinking that people may not fully understand what professional organizing is and how it can help them. One of the most insightful points in the article states: “Just as there are those professionals who help in other areas of our lives (e.g. taxes, real estate, legal matters, investments, retirement accounts, etc.) Professional organizers help when you need those skills but don’t have them yourself, or are having trouble with the job at hand.”

There seems to be a misconception out there that organizing your things and managing paperwork is a skill everyone should naturally have and that it should be done on your own without asking for help from a professional.  Let’s face it.  Organizing seems like it should be easy.  Anyone can sort items into three piles: keep, donate or trash, right?  Anyone can buy bins, baskets and other organizing gadgets to help them get their things in order, true? Not necessarily.

Organizing the right way is much more involved.  It is a process. Sometimes anxiety, emotional issues and other feelings come into play when organizing.  Organizers can help with those hard decisions and give support when needed. They provide insightful ideas and create systems so that clients not only GET organized but STAY organized.

Mr. Henry writes, “professional organizers are trained, skilled professionals who help people create order where it is lacking in their lives, so that they can make long-term improvements and keep disorder at bay. Hiring a professional organizer is no different than getting help with any other thing you may not be able to do on your own.”

How Sappari Solutions Can Really Help You:

Get Started One of the comments we hear most often, “I don’t know where to begin or how to get started with an organizing project”.  We can help you identify what goals you want to achieve for your space and come up with a plan and take steps toward achieving that goal.  Sometimes an initial consultation is all that is needed to get motivated.

By providing a helping hand  You may have an organizing project that you know exactly what you want to have done, how you want to do it, and what you want the end result to look like. We can help you carry out your plan.  For others, having another person with them while they are sorting through items or paperwork, keeps them focused and on task.

Create Systems “Professional organizers can help with clutter, sure, but setting up a system so you won’t wind up where you started is one of the biggest benefits.” [1]  Many people may not know that we also provide help with time management, paperwork and filing systems, meal planning, technology, moving, downsizing and much more.  We also have resources to obtain the help you need for services we do not provide.

If you do not have time to organize or do not want to organize  Tackling an organizing project and maintaining organization requires time and interest.  We can help you if you have a busy schedule or work long hours and do not want to spend your own time organizing your home.

Make decisions Organizing requires lots of decision making.  Decision-making is harder for some than for others. What items do I keep, donate, trash?  What is the best way to store my things?  As professional organizers, we can help you with those tough decisions.  We will NOT tell you to throw everything away.  If fact, you will always make the decision about your possessions.  We will ask questions to facilitate those decisions. We can also advise you on the best ways to store your things, so that you spend less time cleaning, less time maintaining and less time looking for things.  We have resources to advise you on where to take the things you no longer want including donating to charitable organizations, consigning clothes and home goods, etc.

Get organized on a budget you can afford We provide many options in order for you to get organized at a cost that will fit your budget.  We offer in-person organizing, virtual organizing, webinars, workshops and discussion groups. We can help you determine what method is right for you.  I recently wrote a blog post titled Your Clutter Is Costing Much More Than You Think.  I invite you to read it. You may discover paying for organizing services will pay for itself in the long run.

Feel good about doing something for yourself  Organizing your things and paperwork is not a skill that everyone can do naturally.  That is nothing to be ashamed of. We are all good at lots of things, organizing just happens to be OUR specialty. We can help you develop a system to help you get and stay organized.  By using the system and taking control of your space, hopefully, you will feel confident and empowered to maintain your space.

Professional organizers and their clients go on a journey together, tackling issues, solving problems and achieving goals.  It is a bond that is created with compassion and understanding in mind. It is an exciting time, and it may be time for you.
